I met Karl in January 2018. We were both part of the audience of a youtuber that livestreamed video games. To this day I’m still unsure why I decided to go look for a smaller youtube channel to watch. Maybe I was looking for a community to be part of? I don’t know. But there I was. Karl was immediately one of the chatters that stood out. He was funny, witty and… just nice. The first memory I recall is Karl, another chatter and I bantering about each other’s country of origin. When that stream ended, the youtuber and Karl encouraged all the viewers to join her Discord server. I had no idea what Discord even was. But I joined, you know, why not? And that was the beginning of it all. I was very proud to be one of his channel moderators when Karl started live streaming on Twitch several months later. There were so many great moments during those streams. His playthroughs of Late Shift where he would always go upstairs in the hotel instead of trying to pry open the window so that the main character could escape the cops, even though I would repeatedly tell him to just keep trying because IT. WOULD. WORK. After many tries (and help from Google, which I’m not sure I ever told him about) we finally beat the game. And Karl would always forget that we did and would ask me “We still have to beat Late Shift, don’t we?” and I would go “No, ksb, we have. We still haven’t found all the possible endings, though!”. I’ll find those extra endings one day. Another recurring funny bit during his streams was when Karl would forget to put the game screen back on and all the audience would see was his webcam and him reacting to whatever was happening in the game... that we couldn’t see. And I, or some other moderator, would have to write “!dis” in the chat which was a command that played the audio of Hercules, from the show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, shouting “DISAPPOINTEEEEEED”. Then Karl would finally notice and promptly fix the screen. His livestreams were great. But I appreciated even more the conversations and discussions that we held in his Discord server. He always tried to understand the arguments from every side and promote a friendly discussion, which was quite refreshing. The community was ever changing, there were many people from different countries, we shared and learned a lot about each other’s lives, countries, beliefs, etc. And with Karl, there was just something about him. He always felt so genuine, so welcoming. I could feel, simply through a computer screen, that he really cared and loved to learn more about other people. No judgements whatsoever. For someone that wasn’t used to it, I can say it was really weird at first. Does this stranger on the Internet really care about me? Why? What’s the catch? But there was no catch. That’s just how Karl was. Sadly, we never got to meet in person. There were a couple of opportunities, but other things came along and prevented it from ever happening. I will miss him very much but I am very happy that he was part of my life. Love from Portugal <3
