One of the things i will miss most about Karl is the conversations. He was easy to talk to and didn't sugar coat things, usually offering his perspective and information to back it up. We could so easily get into deep, philosophical discussions, and even if he and I did not agree on something, I felt that he was trying to understand my point of view. That type of curiosity drove him from interest to interest, where he devoured information and experimented with what he learned; i admire how intelligent he was and how he absorbed information, always interested in learning. 

Karl also loved to talk about his family. He spoke with awe about Jan's accomplishments, brilliance, and humility. He shone with pride when he spoke about his children and how much he loved them. 

I will truly miss those random chats with Karl. I'll miss his personality, his honesty, and his occasionally questionable sense of humour. Sending his family my love and deepest condolences.
